Agile and Scrum are terms that are frequently used in the context of Project Management and software development. There is a correlation between these two terms, but there are also important differences between Agile and Scrum. And how do you decide which method fits your team and/or company best?
What is Agile?
Agile is an overall philosophy, approach and mindset in Project Management. Agile focuses on flexibility, collaboration and rapid adaptation to changing circumstances. Agile is an adaptive and responsive way of thinking and working. The idea of Agile is that you need to be flexible and agile in dealing with change, for you to thrive as a business.
What is Scrum?
Scrum is an Agile Management Method. There are several different methods, however Scrum is the most frequently used Agile Method. This method also lies closest to the original Agile principles. It is a framework that is used to manage projects and develop software. In Scrum, a project is divided into Sprints, typically lasting two to four weeks. Each Sprint ends with the completion of a workable draft version of the project’s final end product. In Scrum, the emphasis lies on self-organisation and teamwork.
The main differences
There is no one-size-fits-all Agile Method. Choosing the best Agile method depends on several factors, such as the nature of the project, the size of the team, the level of complexity and the stakeholders’ interests.
When making your choice, you should consider the following aspects:
- Explore the different Agile Methods;
- Analyse project requirements;
- Consult with the implementation team;
- Identify the wishes and needs of all stakeholders (include the users);
- Arrange support and training.
